Mamma Mia!

Ok guys. I’m like most of you. I’m not a fan of broadway and definitely not a fan of musicals. I’d rather be watching ESPN any night of the week. But we do it for our ladies because we love them, right?

I recently took my girlfriend to see Mamma Mia at the National Theater in Washington, DC and I must say that as a man’s man, I laughed quite a bit because the humor was surprisingly off color. (Lots of alluding to sex and one night stands.) The musical numbers are fun but filled with a sort of physical comedic humor that kept me from falling asleep in my seat.

Basically the story of a young woman approaching her wedding day and realizing that while she grew up without her father, she desperately wants to have him walk her down the aisle. She stumbles upon her mother’s diary and finds that she (dot, dot, dotted) with three possible fathers in the correct time frame. (It was the sixties after all.)

SO she tricks the three potential dads to come to the place of her wedding and the comedy ensues.

I must say the most shocking thing was the audience’s cult like passion for the music. I mean, the people in this audience were huge ABBA fans. People watching was a lot of fun. When they play “Dancing Queen”, it was like a rock show with the audience singing the words.

The cast was very talented. They could all pull off the songs very well. I thought the mother’s friends were particularly entertaining throughout. The lead has an astonishingly beautiful voice.

Ticket prices weren’t outrageous so what I’m saying to you guys is that you can make your wives/girlfriends happy, score some future points/capital for football season, and actually go to a show that will make you laugh and won’t feel like going to the dentist.
