It seems that every time we move one of the first things we go to visit is the closest zoo. The whole family enjoys going and seeing the different animals and how the zoo is set up. The set up of Dickeron Park Zoo reminded me a lot of the layout at Rolling Hills Refuge in Salina, KS. I do however love the fact that Dickerson Park Zoo breaks down the animals by country they come from.
Dickerson Park Zoo (located in Springfield, MO) is open year around except New Years Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas day. Dickerson Park Zoo has over one hundred species of animals. The animals are broken down by where they come from: South America, Australia, Missouri Habitats, Tropical Asia, Africa, and Other Exhibits (animals from America etc.). There are a few animals at Dickerson Park Zoo that I have not seen at any other small/medium size zoo I have been to such as: cheetah, elephants, alligators, and hippopotamus. The zoo is well kept and the trail is clearly marked with different colored signs that tell you what animals are in the area. You are given a map when you pay which gives you the layout of the zoo and is marked with animals so you know what is where. I will say that the trails are a bit odd and we had to back track a couple of times because we missed a few animals due to the set up.
The zoo offers a train ride for $2 per person. The train takes you in a circle around where the Lemur’s are. You can also get food and drinks such as sandwiches, snacks, and ice cream at Bush Country Cafe located inside the zoo.
- Bush Country Cafe Hours-
9:30-4p.m., daily April-September
10:30-2:30, daily in March and October
10:30-2:30, weekends November-February
You can rent strollers for ($3)single or ($5) double, wagons for ($4), and wheel chairs are available upon request. You can even purchase animal feed for $.50 at the outback corral petting zoo to feed the animals in the petting zoo. My daughters favorite thing though was paying $2 for four wafers to feed the giraffe. There is elevated deck at the giraffe exhibit and you can purchase the wafers from (10-4 p.m., April-September)and (11-3 p.m., weekends in March and October). Unfortunately giraffe feeding is closed from November to February.
The zoo has numerous special events through out the year such as: Party for the Planet (in April to celebrate earth day), Zoofest (in June childrens music and activities through out the park), Art Hone Wild (in July free art activities with Springfield Regional Arts council and friends of the zoo), and in October there is the Halloween Spooktacular. These are just a few of the events there are many others that go on through out the year. We have not had the pleasure of going to any of the special events at Dickerson Park Zoo yet,but we are looking forward to doing so in the future.
- Dickerson Park Zoo Schedule -
April- September: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
October- March: 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
- Admission Fees -
Adults- $7 Children (3-12)- $5
Seniors (65 and older)- $5
Children 2 and under get in for free. If you have a group of fifteen or more people you get in for $2 off of each admission.
They also have special fees for Friends of the Zoo members. The family rates start at $65 (for 2 adults and 1 child) for a years membership. With this membership your family can visit the zoo any time they want for a year and get in free. The members can also get two visitors in free a couple times a year and they get invited to special members only events at the zoo. We would become members if we lived closer, but we are almost 2 hours away so it is not worth it for us.
I would say that this zoo is a nice small to medium sized zoo. They offer a better varieties of animals than some zoo’s of their size and the price is very reasonable. We look forward to visiting the zoo again in the future. I just wish the trails were set up differently so we did not have to back track to see certain animals that were off on their own.
