August 2007, our family enjoyed a week in the Beaches resort in Boscobel. At the airport, we were greeted by Beaches employees as well as our driver who would take us from the airport to the resort, two hours east. The drive to the resort was amazing and yet a bit hair raising, not so much due to the driver, but the third world roads and some ongoing highway construction. Once at the the resort, everything was wonderful. Tipping is forbidden, so don’t even try. The food was fabulous overall. Every day features food from various regions. For those US citizens staying here, American night consists of the absolute best turkey I’ve ever experienced. The jerk marinade was slow cooked to the core of this bird and oh my, was it good. The beaches are beautiful, vendors are allowed to set up shop for some local gift items. There are plenty of things to do included in the price of your vacation such as, snorkeling, kayaks, ocean tri-cycle, wind surfing as well as glass bottom boat tours and not to be missed is the new water slide park. It was in the final stages of construction during our last trip, but it looked awsome.
There are softserve ice cream and slushie machines in various locations for the kids. Oh, and in addition to the buffet style restaurants, there are cook to order facilities for just about anything you could want.
Where the value of this vacation really came into play was when hurricane Dean hit the island on our fifth day. The resort staff went the extra mile to assure our safety and keep us entertained. It was in the safety of the basement of the resort that they served that amazing turkey. But to add icing to the cake, because of the disruption from the hurricane, we were given a free vacation voucher which we’re using this month. We’re returning with our original party plus four. We can’t wait to get back.
One other Pro, the flight to Jamaica from the US is a mere couple hours, yet when at the resort you would think you landed near Europe. Met many European, South American and Asian families. It was a breath of fresh air spending time with people from other cultures than the one I’m getting frustrated with, but that’s a personal thing. The Europeans, South Americans and Asians stayed during the hurricane, 90% of the Americans fled for home and made quite a scene about it. I actually felt bad for some of the employees for the abuse they experienced from my scared countrymen. Since all the adults in out group are current and past health care providers, we volunteered to assist in any emergencies which was very much appreciated by the resort nurse.
One Con that would not fit below. . It can be difficult to claim a lounge chair on the beach when the resort is full. You need to get there early. Too many rude Americans ( I can say this from experience) will drop towels and other items on the chairs early in the morning and run off to do other things expecting the chair to be saved until they return.
