Corsica

In mid June we visited the north of Corsica. My first suggestion would be to visit after June 20th as the weather was too cool for swimming in the ocean until June 18th. Apparently July and especially August should be avoided as the island is full of tourists in these months.

Corsica is an island in the Mediterranean which since 250 years has been part of France. It was governed by the Genovese before. The island was only an Independent State for 14 years in the middle of the 18th century. It is located within 35 minutes flight time from Nice, about 4 hours by hydrofoil or 6 hours by steam boat / ferry.

We flew on CCM Corsican Mediteranean Airlines. I cannot post a review as the airline is not listed on E Opinions and they do not respond to my E mails requesting they list the airline. It’s also a shame that one cannot post pictures like on other sites. It would make reading reviews a lot more interesting.

Here is a link to a video clip about CCM:

We only visited the Northern part of the island. We began in the resort of St. Florent, about 30 miles from Bastia Airport. They call it the St. Tropez of Corsica. It is a cute fishing village situated in the Cap Corse area of the island.

About 15 minutes away by boat are located the most gorgeous beaches called Loto Beach and Salecia in the Desert des Agriates. However there are cows on Loto beach so beware. The beaches are like in the Bahamas and the water is a gorgeous transparent blue.

Near St. Florent are beautiful villages like Oletta. Not to be missed is the tiny church called Saint Michelle in Murato built in the 13th century by people from Pisa.

Another highlight in Murato is to have dinner at the Auberge Capo di Monte. It’s a gorgeous farm house where Pauline the owner will serve a delicious Corsican meal in a gorgeous setting. However one must reserve way in advance.

The nicest hotel in St. Florent is the Hotel de la Roya. It has a pool and a nice beach but is expensive.

Here is a link with pictures of the hotel I posted on another site.

If you have a car I would advise driving around the Cap Corse. North from St. Florent to the village of Nonza, continuing to the fishing village of Centuri famous for its lobster restaurants. Then around to the seaside village of Erbulanga, onto Bastia, a major city and then back to St. Florent. The trip would last about 5 hours.

The second resort we visited was Ile Rousse. The resort has a gorgeous beach where one can rent umbrellas for shade. Nice shops and restaurants about 1 hour south of St. Florent. In July and August only, there is a bus service between the two resorts. We stayed at a very nice hotel here called Cala di L’Oru. Reasonably priced with a nice pool within 10 minutes walking from the beach.

We then went to Calvi another resort close to an hour south of Ile Rousse. Calvi is on a nice beach with a beautiful Citadel. They say that Christopher Columbus was born here.

The town is very lively with yachts, shops and restaurants. However the water is shallow here so one must walk a while to swim.

From Calvi and Ile Rousse there is a delightful train that travels between the two towns. We took the train to the resort of Algajola. There is a gorgeous beach here.

In Calvi we stayed at the Hotel St. Christophe which was reasonably priced with a nice pool but not on the beach.

Other interesting parts of the island to visit are:

- The mountain resort of Corte which used to be the capital of Corsica in the 18th century

-The Cliffs of Piana

-Ajaccio; the town where Napoleon was born.

In the south:

- The village of Sartene.

- Bonificao, a small town on the ocean with a Citadel. They say it’s the most beautiful tourist site of Corsica.

-The beaches around Porto Vechio such as Santa Julia.

A trip to Corsica is certainly recommended. As there is so much to see one needs a minimum 2 weeks.
