Best Wester Valdez Harbor Inn

Have you been to Alaska? From my experience, I noticed that if you leave Anchorage, hotels can be sparse in some areas, very sparse, so we were happy when we drove into Valdez and actually had a choice of hotels. Even with that choice, options are limited, but we settled on the Best Western Valdez Harbor Inn located right next to the harbor.

At some point in the past years this little hotel has been remodeled - not real recently, but at some point. The remodel has its obvious signs because they attempted to cut corners, which shows, but the rooms and facilities were in decent shape.

The price was great at $115 a night this was the cheapest lodging during our 8 nights in the state of Alaska.

Our room had two beds, the room was fairly clean, but not perfect. The hotel itself (halls and room) had a bit of a musty smell, the pillows needed a good run through the wash machine, and the bath tub need a good deep scrubbing.

However, our previous two nights were spent in Chitina and Kennicott and we were simply pleased to see a TV in our room here. This hotel offers satellite TV, for those that aren’t familiar with the set-up they do have instructions on the envelope for the room key. This came in handy, since I was completely unfamiliar with the set-up. As a nice bonus, the hotel also has DVD players hooked up to the TV.

Within the room we had a microwave, refrigerator, coffee and coffee maker. The bathroom also had a hair dryer and the closet had an iron and ironing board stashed in it. A window was at the back of the room with a table and chairs next to it. White the hotel is next to the water, most rooms don’t have a great view. All of the rooms on one side simply have views of the parking lot and the others (like ours) looked out on a small boat dock. We did get a kick out of watching the coast guard pull in and if you craned your head a bit you could see the end of the Alaska Pipeline, it was interesting to check the end station lit up at night.

The only other extras in the room included a clock radio, night stand and a few lamps.

Like I said breakfast is complimentary, but minimal. The had scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy for hot items. Baked goods included donuts, bagels and muffins and they also had breads out with different spreads. To drink they offered juice, milk and coffee. The eating area is small, and the food wasn’t well stocked.

The Valdez Harbor Inn features many of the regular amenities, which can be rare in Alaska. This included free wireless internet and one computer in the lobby, a small fitness room and continental breakfast. This hotel also accepts pets, but they only allow them in the smoking rooms.

Overall this hotel wouldn’t be that great down in the states, but for an Alaskan hotel its actually pretty good. With the inclusion of a TV (which can be rare in a hotel room here) and other extras like the refrigerator, microwave and free breakfast this hotel isn’t that bad.
