My company head quarters is located in Santa Clara with some large satellite campuses in nearby cities such as Menlo Park and Palo Alto. As a result I travel to this part of California very often and I have probably stayed in most of the hotels within reasonable driving distances. In the list of usual suspects , the Sheraton Palo Alto falls right in the middle of the pack, neither to be desired nor avoided as a place to stay when I attend HQ meetings.
Location
Let’s start with the positives. This hotel is so close to the Stanford U you can practically walk to class from the main lobby. The back of the hotel parking lot opens to a CalTran station, and the quaint University Avenue is immediately behind the hotel offering a rich mix of restaurants, stores and bookstores. The hotel is approximately 5 minutes from the 101 (or 10 minutes during rush hour) and it is situated right on El Camino Real. Location-wise, one cannot ask for a more conveniently located hotel in the middle of Silicon Valley.
Rooms
The hotel itself is not new and the design amply demonstrates its age. The lobby is rather unassuming - particularly for the price the hotel is charging for the rooms. There is a small pool in the middle of the hotel, enveloped by the front and back halves of the hotel. The front of the hotel is 3-storey high, the rear has two more floors than the front.
Parking is to the right of the hotel via key card access. Parking spots could be scarce when the hotel occupancy is high. The rooms have undergone a recent face lift but the overall appearance of the hotel is still on the tired side.
The rooms are moderately spacious and decently equipped with a large flat screen TV, renovated (but small) bathroom, and well insulated windows. With the heavy drapes pulled shut, one cannot hear the trains and traffic outside.
However, the walls between the rooms are frightfully thin and NOT well insulated for noise. Let’s put it this way: if the next door neighbour is of the male gender, you will have no problem tracking his bathroom habits.
Food
Room service was not particularly remarkable. The portions are adequate but the food was rather bland. However, with University Avenue just around the corner, the Town and Country Village (a strip mall) right next door, one is never short on dining options when staying at the Sheraton.
Amenities for Business Travelers
Wired Internet access could be had for 9.99/24 hours in the room and it usually runs at 32kb to 64kb/second. The work desk is large enough to accommodate the laptop and a couple of files. There is a remote print service at the hotel that is free for guests to print boarding passes and to address other light-weight document production needs.
Fitness
There is a small fitness room on the main floor at the back of the hotel for the guests. There are also a number of commercial gyms close by. I usually visit the 24Hr Fitness on Showers Street, roughly 3 miles from the hotel off El Carmino Real. There is also a stadium across the street for running and other outdoor activities.
Summary
With the company corporate discount, I usually pay between $170 and $200 per night at this hotel with free parking. Given the location and the dearth of competition in this part of town, the price tag is almost reasonable despite the hotel’s age and the complete lack of noteworthiness. I just wish Sheraton would spruce up the place, create a unique identity for the hotel, and put some emphasis on customer service.
