Cedar Point

Just came back from Cedar Point with my 15-year old son - the 9-hour drive from New York was VERY long but definitely worth it! We are both roller coaster fanatics and had a great time. I was hoping the crowds would be manageable, being the last week in August - and they were. CP is on a peninsula right on Lake Erie, and is one of the prettiest parks I’ve ever been to in terms of location. Most of the rides we walked right onto, some were 15-20 min wait and no more.

We stayed on-site at the Breakers, and although I had read some negative reviews of this hotel, it was beautiful and conveniently located. We stayed in the new Tower section which was very clean and friendly. The back of the hotel was literally ON the beach (Lake Erie) which was so beautiful, and it was a 2-minute walk on the boardwalk to the entrance to the park. The front of the hotel faced the park, and my son was thrilled to have a perfect view of 5 of the 17 coasters from his bed. There were 3 pools and a TGIF right in our building. The only thing I would change (add) would be some evening activities at the hotel, after the park closed, such as some live music.

The rides and coasters were incredible, and we were able to go on everything NUMEROUS times throughout the week. The water park was also great.I know you’ve all read the coaster reviews all over the internet - but it’s always fun to write your own:) Here were our highlights:

Millenium Force - The world’s first coaster over 300 feet tall. FAST and steep lift hill which literally starts straight out of the station. The first drop is breathtaking and the entire ride, with a top speed of 93 MPH - is exciting and one of the best coasters we’ve ever been on.

Maverick - CP’s newest coaster - voted best new coaster in the world in 2007. This was our favorite - you are taken up a VERY FAST lift hill, and the first drop is 95 degrees - you can’t see the track at first! A series of exciting maneuvers rushes you halfway through the ride into a tunnel, where after your car comes to a stop - you are launched again at 70MPH through the rest of the ride. Amazing. Best air time in the park. Two negatives though - sometimes the cars will not make it over the lift hill and roll back down (and this happened as we were next - I almost didn’t get on). It rolls very slowly back with no problem. The other thing - DONT RIDE AT NIGHT IN THE FIRST CAR. The coaster is situation right on the lake, and not only will you get THOUSANDS of bugs in your eyes, nose and ears, but they hit you in the face so hard it hurts - we were miserable…

Magnum XL-200 - The park’s first coaster over 200 feet - still a great ride. Great location along the lake - loved this ride - slow lift hill, but this coaster has such character and lots of tunnels. One of the best!

Raptor - The park’s inverted coaster. Very fast - upside down what seems like a dozen times. When we rode in the front seat, I was terrified. So we only went on 4 more times :) LOVED this ride!

Mantis - The park’s stand-up roller coaster. Great ride - TO WATCH. Very painful and uncomfortable.

Blue Streak - small wooden coaster - SO much fun - great air time.

Mean Streak - Another PAINFUL ride. I though my brains were coming loose and my head was killing me. I screamed over and over again for them to get me off this thing - my son was hysterical laughing (at me) throughout the ride.

Iron Dragon and Corkscrew - Fun little rides. Can’t compare to the bigger ones…

And now for the three I chickened out on and watched my son: MAX AIR - Riders sit facing out on a disc - and then are spun and swung so high up in the air, I swear you have to be nuts to get on this. WICKED TWISTER - Right on the beach - great ride to watch. Couldn’t get up the nerve. And of course - TOP THRILL DRAGSTER. SO much fun to watch - great theming, bleachers for us to watch. My son rode a few times - once in the front, and I truly believe it was one of the great moments of his life (says him)

TONS of other rides for every age. Of course it costs a fortune to eat and drink - so we went back to the hotel for meals. (Remember - you can get a cup of FREE ice water at every food stand). There was a fridge in our room and we saved a lot of money. Also - a 5 minute drive gets you to a strip with almost any restaurant you can think of.

To sum up - CP - is a GREAT amusement park with something for everyone, every age. My voice is finally coming back from screaming on the rides all week! Definitely make the trip - but if you’re coming as far as we did - see if you can share the driving!
