Late September and early October ushers in a flurry of garden activity regardless of where you live. In the northern half of the country we’re cleaning remnants of the summer, harvesting pumpkins and squash, and pruning some woody shrubs. In the southern states we’re pruning and maintaining the second season’s garden. It makes little difference which half of the country you live in, most of us will misplace our pruners or cell phones while working in the garden. My pruners permanently disappeared twice this year. I’ll stand in front of everyone now to state, that is why I now wear my Fiskars Phone and Garden Pocket while dancing with the plants.

It’s easy to get crazy, lazy or dazy while working in the garden. Long hours, frequent bending over, hauling plant debris, hot sun and high humidity, and forgetting to eat are dangerous combinations and I won’t even begin to say how many times I’ve dumped a yard waste bag to retrieve my misplaced pruners. The really unfortunate thing is I’ve had this garden pocket for at least a year and just never wore it. There is no excuse for my previous behavior.

The past two months have been good and free of a single yard waste diving episode and I’m certain my neighbors are disappointed. They definitely let me know it was entertaining.

The Fiskars Phone and Garden Pocket has an adjustable nylon belt that clips around my waist. The belt slides through a guide on the pocket so it’s easy to conveniently move the pocket to one side or another, depending on which way you are bending or working. It has two pockets, one small and one large (twice the size of the small), and the small has a drawstring that cinches up to keep your phone secure. (I loathe the intrusion of the phone when escaping to the garden, but it has been necessary to carry it at all times this summer.) While designed for the phone, I find the shape better suited for my pruners although it wouldn’t take much effort to puncture the sides. The sides of this pocket are made of an open-weave, flexible polyester mesh. It even has an exterior elastic pen holder.

The larger compartment (approximately 5 ½ inches wide x 4 inches high and 2 inches deep) has a key clip on the outside and the bottom of the pocket is a waterproof, sturdy coated mesh that allows drainage of wet garden tools. When I use this space for my pruners they tend to fit in sideways and flop around. It seems insecure. This pocket appears to have been designed for carrying seed packets, sunscreen, insect repellent, or anything with a more rectangular shape.

Earlier this year I picked up a scabbard for my pruners and my pruning saw. This has a metal belt clip and I’ve been attaching that to the belt of this Fiskars garden pocket. It looks like I’m going to have a stand-off with someone at noon on Main Street, but this combination keeps me from misplacing garden tools. Replacing them several times a season gets expensive and is a foolish waste of resources, not to mention it makes me feel like an absent-minded gardener-it’s unnerving.

The pocket is washable. It’s designed for use in a dew-covered, wet garden. I like the cinch on the phone pocket as well as the shape, but wish there were two pockets that size rather than one narrow and one large. The large size simply provides too much opportunity for items to fall out, especially while bent over, or for shrubs to snag objects. If I didn’t know better I’d say the rose bushes like to play hide and seek. They hide my pruners and make me seek among their thorny canes.

Fiskars’ Phone and Garden Pocket is a good concept for organizing gardeners, but perhaps they need to rethink their design a little more for the really active gardener. There are many others like me who become very physical in the garden-I personally know several.
