SUPER 8 MOTEL - SHERIDAN

When traveling by car I tend to drive as far as I can before exhaustion takes over and forces me to find a hotel. Traveling through Wyoming that means if I feel the least bit tired I better find something as the towns (at times) are few and far between. That is how I ended up at the Super 8 - Sheridan, I was tired.

I Should Have Kept Going

When we entered the small lobby we were greeted by a friendly male clerk. He had us checked in within minutes and on our way to our second floor room. Dragging our luggage up the stairs (no elevator), we added more scuff marks to the carpet and probably picked up quite a bit of dirt on our luggage. If I hadn’t been so tired we would have walked right back down the stairs before even seeing our room.

Entering the room we were hit with a musty smell. My mom determined to get some rest checked the one area of each room that makes or breaks the spending the night deal. Luckily the beds had clean pillowcases, sheets, blankets, and bedspreads. The beds were firm and the pillows were flat. But, they were clean…so we stayed.

After a quick check of the room we decided to pick up some fast food and bring it back. When leaving a hotel room I always double check to make sure the door locked behind me. This one didn’t. No matter what I tried it just wouldn’t lock. My mother went to tell the clerk about the problem and he came right up to check it out. He tried a new card key and a couple of other things before determining we would have to move to another room.

The next room smacked us with the same musty smell, but the beds and bedding were clean and the lock worked so we were in this room to stay. After our fast food run we did notice that the room’s air conditioner seemed to have cured some of the musty smell…or we had just gotten used to it.

Besides the two beds the room contained a nightstand with phone and radio/alarm clock, dresser with 25″ TV, table and two chairs. There was plenty of lamps/lighting but we were scared to turn too many of them on. The room was worn and dingy in dim light…we didn’t want to see into the corners.

The Bathroom

While I am a fan of curved shower rods, when using the shower, they are not appropriate for small bathrooms. The toilet area becomes overran by the protruding shower curtain. Such is the case in the Super 8 - Sheridan bathroom. The sink basin runs along one wall of the bathroom, yet is small enough that it is cluttered with the amenities. Coffee pot, regular & decaf coffee pouches, sugar, sweetener, creamer are in one corner. Pantene 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner, generic facial and body soap in the other. A hair dryer is on the wall above them. The towels and wash clothes appeared to be new, but were stiff and scratchy. I will give the shower a positive comment as the water pressure was good and hot.

Free Continental Breakfast…

When leaving the hotel we had trouble getting down the stairs. The people trying to take advantage of the cereal, doughnuts, muffins, and bagels breakfast had only one table to sit at so had chosen the stairs as their seating. After having to displace the stair sitters we decided to not bother trying to get through the cramped space just to grab a doughnut.

Other amenities are non existent. I could not locate a swimming pool or exercise room anywhere in this hotel.

Checkout

We had to move the stair sitters, who had now become the lobby desk leaners, again. Once the checkout process began it was quick. My mom confirmed her (approximately) $80 AARP rate and handed in the card keys. Then we were outta there.

Overall

The Super 8 - Sheridan is not someplace I would ever visit again. It did the job in giving us a place to get a few hours sleep and that was it. If I had had more energy we would have walked out and found another hotel. The dingy, smelly rooms are in dire need of help. The breakfast and the area to eat it in is a joke. The employees seem to realize the hotel is in disrepair and try to make up for it by being helpful and extremely nice. They, and the Super 8 - Sheridan guests, deserve better than what the hotel gives.
