We visited Alcatraz on the night tour on July 28. It was by far the best tour I have been on in a long time. This would be the perfect for anyone except maybe children under the age of 5.
We spent the day at Fisherman’s wharf and Pier 33, so we parked the car all day for $21.00, a really good deal, and then we didn’t have to worry about finding parking later on in the day for the tour, which the tour does state parking is a problem near the docks where the tours leave the main land. I would greatly suggest spending the day in this area, if you take the night tour at Alcatraz.
We purchased the tickets on-line about a month before the trip (cost $63.00 for 2 adults for the night tour). I am glad we did because when we found the place where you board the boat, they had a sign that stated they were sold out of tickets to Alcatraz until August 4, unless you purchase tickets from merchants near Fisherman’s Wharf or near the pier. So I would strongly recommend purchasing your tickets early.
There are two night tours, but they are NOT offered every night. We took the later tour and I wish we would have taken the one before it, than we would have had more time on the island.
On the boat trip to the island they give you background information on the island. Also on the boat is a snacks (nachos/hot dogs) and drinks to purchase.
When we arrived on the island, we were given headphones to listen to a narrated tour. You are in charge of the headphones and you can stop, pause or rewind while on the tour. It is a self-guided tour, but they did have a few people from the park service give additional information about the island the inmates that were housed there. The problem with the later tour is if you want to listen to the headphones entirely, you will miss additional speakers in the prison and the gift shop closes early. However, we did hear a tales from the prison, which was very interesting.
If you took the earlier tour, you could have finished the audio tour and been able to listen to the speakers and still catch the last boat. The boat on the way back to the main land is a lot larger than the boat that brought us over, due to the people who stayed a little longer on the earlier evening tour.
If you didn’t dress warm, make sure you are in line early, so you can get a spot in the boat instead of on top, where it is cold with the elements right on you.
