Hello, I am a teacher who spends my summers traveling as much as possible, but on a teacher’s salary, budgeting is a must! I feel like I have found a well-kept secret in Gate1 travel. I just got back from my second trip with Gate1 travel “11 day enchanting Italy.” My husband and I booked this trip after last summer’s first wonderful experience with a Gate1 tour called “14 day Iberia.” Both tours exceeded our expectations. I tend to be a worry-wart, Gate1 travel provides such cost-efficient tours and I’m a big believer in “you get what you pay for” but Gate1 is an exception to the rule. After paying for our first tour, I thought to myself “this is too good to be true” so naturally before we left, I worried that our transfers wouldn’t show up, then I worried our hotels would be shabby, I worried that Gate 1 really was too good to be true. Now, after my second tour I can reserve a trip worry-free.
Before you leave on your Gate1 tour, you will receive a packet of information including local information, addresses and phone numbers of each hotel where you will stay, where/how to meet up with your transfers from the airport, tipping information, and the number of your tour manager should you have any problems. The tour manager stays with you throughout the tour and is trained to handle any problems you might have so that you don’t have to, anything from where to get stamps to lost luggage or whatever you need. On both our tours, the tour managers were efficient, informative, organized, and glad to help. On our most recent trip to Italy, our tour guide, Maria, was not only helpful but she had been doing tours for over 20 years and was so fun-loving, she made the trip unforgettable.
During a Gate1 tour a typical day might be a morning tour with a local trained tour guide. Each tour guide is well educated and all spoke good English. The local tour guides are extremely knowledgeable about their areas, our tour group was particularly impressed with our local guide for Rome (also named Maria) so much that she became the topic of dinner conversation. In Italy we by-passed huge lines to get into the Vatican and the Coliseum because our certified tour guide pre-arranged for us to get through without the wait!
All the hotels where we stayed were satisfactory. Sometimes luxury was sacrificed for location, which was fine by us. All hotels were clean, nice, and for the most part, we’ve been happy with the hotel choices.
