The Hershey Lodge

Every 4th of July weekend like clockwork, for the past 5 years, we walk into the Hershey Lodge hotel. It has been a long time tradition that my 3 kids look forward to. We have the hotel down pat now, which isn’t an easy task being that is it a very large resort. Please enjoy my review and I hope I can persuade you to give the Hershey Lodge a try for your next Pennsylvania trip with your family.

WHAT THE HERSHEY LODGE HAS TO OFFER

The Hershey Lodge has over 650 rooms varying from suites to queen & king sized beds. I am reviewing the rooms with double Queen size beds since this is the only type of room I have experienced. Every room has the following:

~ Cable TV

~ Refrigerators in the bathrooms (very small, but we never put more than a few drinks & a few (or more) pounds of fudge.

~ Coffee Makers with Hershey hot chocolate mixes & coffee mixes in the room.

~ Iron & ironing board

~ Hair Dryer

~ Internet Access (although I’ve never used this service, so I cannot comment on it, just that it is available)

The Hershey Lodge is basically sectioned into fun names like Peppermint Patty, Milk Chocolate Bar, Reeses & so forth. This makes it far easier to find out where you are & where you should be according to their map.

They also have large banquet rooms available for weddings & conventions. During a horrible weather year, everything was shut down including the Hershey Park & all outside activities for The Hershey Lodge. The Lodge offered a kids Bingo in one of the banquet rooms which was seriously hysterical. The kids would have to fill up the “B” letters & “O” letters for one game & had to yell, “I HAVE BO” to win. Each winner will get to pick full sized candy bars all day/night long.

EATING / SHOPPING AT THE HERSHEY LODGE

There are 4 restaurants available at The Hershey Lodge if you choose to eat there. Hershey Grill is a fine place to eat that is family friendly. It’s a bit on the pricey side but the food is good. There is also The Forebay, Lebbie Lebkicher’s, and the Bear’s Den. We have not eaten in these places so I cannot comment as to the food quality. They are always packed, so the food should be good.

The Cocoa Beanery is a cross between a salad bar and take out hot chocolate which is located in the main lobby. There is also a bar area and a gift shop called The Sweet Memories Gift Shop where you can find anything chocolate to take come.

ENTERTAINMENT

Various times of the day you will find Hershey characters inside the lobby for your kids to enjoy & pictures to be taken. There is a kids check in area also that the kids will enjoy. A beautiful fireplace in the main lobby is wonderful in the winter time when we come back for Christmas at Hershey (I will review this in a different review for the Park itself).

There have indoor & outdoor pools available along with a little spa area. They also have a free miniature golf area which is always fun.

Once again, indoor entertainment is available during bad weather.

THE SERVICES

The Shuttle Bus is probably the once service I couldn’t live without. Every 20 minutes there is a free air conditioned Shuttle Bus that picks you up in the front of the Hershey Lodge to take you to Hershey Park. They drop you off right in front of Chocolate World/Hershey Park. When you leave the park the Shuttle will pick you up & drop offs are various areas around the Lodge. If you get a nice driver, they sometimes make an unscheduled stop if you are in an area of the Lodge that they don’t normally stop at. This way you can come & go from Hershey Park all day long if the kids (or mom & dad) need a break during the day.

Maid service comes every day & a newspaper is left at each door during the weekdays. Food service is available also.

OUR LAST EXPERIENCE AT THE HERSHEY LODGE

I thought I’d limit this part of the review to our last experience which was this past July 4th weekend.

After making a reservation online, I found the price cheaper at a later date. I called The Hershey Lodge on the phone and they honored the lower price. While checking in we were greeted & given chocolate bars & a map to the Hershey Lodge. Service are available to take your bags but we always stay in a room with an outside door so we just pull up to our room. We have never encountered a rude employee which is a joy in itself.

Our room had 2 queen sized beds. Nothing fancy but equipped with everything we would need for our stay. Everything was clean & in order. The pool areas are well staffed & I noticed they checked the pool water chemicals a few times while were there. Kids are asked not to run for safety reasons & was well enforced.

We came & went on the Shuttle Bus many times. Always on time & very happy with that service. The only “con” to our stay was a true “con”. Let me explain:

The morning of our last day I received a phone call at 6am. Scared & in a panic that something happened at home, I quickly answered the phone. It was a man saying he was our “friendly wake up call” and “how did we want to pay for the remainder of our stay”. I promptly hung up & during our check out inquired about why they would be that rude. A manager came & said they would never ask for credit card information, nor call at 6am. They apologized and said they would look into it. I can only imagine how many people may have given out that information.

I absolutely do recommend a stay at The Hershey Lodge. The staff is friendly & the hotel is clean and kid friendly. Unfortunately, you might need to go on a new diet after returning from Hershey PA.
