I rented a red Mustang hardtop from Hertz at the Oakland, CA airport. I was in quite a rush when I picked up the vehicle, so I didn’t thoroughly inspect it before I left the lot. I instantly noticed that the floor mats looked like they should be in an old vehicle used by lots of kids–covered with stains. I have never seen floormats like that in a rental car, and was surprised they hadn’t been shampooed or replaced, but that was all I thought about it.
When I was checking out of the lot, the clerk needed me to roll down the window and open the door. That’s when I noticed the cobweb connecting the driver’s side door and mirror. Cobwebs can collect quickly, so I thought nothing of it.
It wasn’t until I was on the freeway that I noticed the huge amount of dust on the dashboard and the console. I was trying to check the speedometer, and the sun’s glare off of the dust covering the chrome gauge made reading my speed difficult.
There was so much dust on the console, on the steering wheel and on the dash, that I could run my finger a few inches over any of these surfaces and come away with a dirty finger.
Yuck! The car was so dirty, it was unsafe! I couldn’t safely read the gauges at highway speeds. I had to stare at them for a few seconds to be able to discern the gauge reading past the dense, speckled glare of the dust on the chrome.
That evening, I got in the car in cooler weather. That’s when I noticed the rear windshield was ridiculously dirty. The condensation pattern showed thick dust. I noticed giant swirl marks on the front windshield and had to use the windshied washer to see.
This car is in Hertz’ “Fun” collection and cost more than $100.00 for a single day’s rental.
It’s my understanding that cars are “detailed” before leaving rental establishments. That has been my experience at Enterprise and Midway.
Apparently, they’re not even washed at Hertz. And what I can’t figure out is how the dust got there. If the vehicle hadn’t been rented for awhile, one would assume it would be fully closed and unable to collect dust.
I don’t know, but I do know that vehicle was nowhere near as “Fun” as it was supposed to be. I had dirty hands while driving and had a hard time reading the console and seeing out of the windows.
I would like to know if it’s Hertz usual policy to rent dirty vehicles. If so, it’s a ridiculous safety hazard and a generally unsanitary practice.
I wanted a refund of at least part of my rental fee. I did not get what I paid for–a “Fun” car. I got a gross, scary, frustrating car. That’s not fun.
Hertz sent me an email saying:
“We sincerely apologize for the condition of the vehicle you received. All Hertz vehicles should be properly cleaned, serviced, and in good mechanical condition before being released for rental. The condition of the vehicle you received is a concern to us and we apologize for the inconvenience you experienced. We always want to provide quality vehicles to our customers and certainly appreciate your letting us know of your experience. This matter will be reviewed with our maintenance personnel.”
No partial refund. No 10% off coupon. Nothing. I won’t be renting with Hertz again.
