Location
The Hilton Garden Inn Lexington is located south of the city directly off of the interstate off of Man-O-War Blvd. If you’re looking for a convenient location, this is it. It’s close to the interstate, so you can get going if your travels are to elsewhere. My mother, who was traveling with my family, used to live in Lexington and noted that if you got to Man-O-War, you could get anywhere else.
Check In and Lobby
We were greeted almost immediately upon entering the lobby. The lobby is spacious and contains a nice seating area (which people used until almost midnight), and a nice dining area where you can partake of the breakfast.
Next to the check-in counter is a small “pantry” area where you may purchase drinks or snacks. I assume you can have them billed to your room, but as we didn’t purchase anything, I am not certain.
Check-in was painless. I had called the hotel directly a few weeks before to reserve two rooms. My company has a corporate rate with them that I could not get without calling directly, but it was worth it. My rate of $85 per night (including taxes) was a good bit less than what I was able to find online. Everything was in order, and at check-in, we were given cards good for two free bottles of water each. We got all four bottles of water, and the kids and my wife downed them quickly.
The Room
We had requested a double for my wife and I and our two young sons. The room well appointed, and I’ve come to expect that from a Hilton Garden Inn. The only problem was a rattling air conditioner that was running right when we arrived. I called the front desk, and they noted that unfortunately, they could not fix it that night, but they offered to put us in another room just down the hall. Since my mother was traveling with us, we didn’t want to be too far from her room, and we were not. Since we hadn’t unpacked, the switch was made easily, and the new room was just like the old one.
The decor was tastefully done, and I could easily spend a few days at this Hilton Garden Inn without getting tired of the room. Both beds in our room were very comfortable with lots of pillows and fluffy down comforters. There was a nice side chair and a table. There was a working desk with plenty of outlets at the desk top for PCs and phones to charge. The best thing was a Herman Miller desk chair. QUITE comfortable, and I’d love to be able to sit at that desk and do some work. Unfortunately, this was a pleasure trip, so no need for that.
Our room had a 27″ TV that offered the usual assortment of channels. My mother’s room was a King and offered an LCD television, which she enjoyed immensely. I guess at some point all rooms will be updated to LCDs, but for now, it looks like only Kings are getting them.
There was a small “dorm style” refrigerator in the room as well as a coffee maker with coffee and fixin’s. The fridge was large enough to hold our milk and some sodas for the boys.
The bathroom was tastefully done with lots of marble. The shower curtain was one of those “curve outward” bars, so you had extra room in the shower. The shower head had plenty of pressure, and it was a Water-Pik. Generally, in my experience, Water-Piks don’t work very well, but this one did (maybe Water-Pik has improved its quality).
The bath had plenty of soaps and towels for a family of four as well as shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and mouthwash. All of us slept well that night, and the only negative thing I can think to mention about the room is that the AC cycled on and off a lot. It’s controlled by a wall-mounted thermostat, but it’s a unit mounted under the window. I think if we’d set it low enough it would have just stayed on, but my wife didn’t want it too chilly.
Pool and Fitness
I used the fitness center to get some exercise in. It closes at 11 PM, so I was able to get in for about 50 minutes of cycling. The pool closes at 10 PM, so we were not able to use that. It is an indoor pool and it’s supposed to be heated. The fitness center didn’t offer much but a bike, a stair stepper, and a small weight machine. I’d prefer a larger fitness center, but I guess this would do if you were desperate.
Dining
The Hilton Garden Inn does not offer a free breakfast. I sure wish it did, and with Hampton Inn, its lower priced cousin, offering free breakfast, you think they would as well. A single breakfast buffer went for about $17, which was a lot more than we’d want to spend. Our rate didn’t include breakfast either. We decided to pass on breakfast at the Hilton and instead just picked up something from McDonald’s.
There are plenty of places to choose from when it comes to dining. The Hilton is located on a side road that runs parallel to Man-O-War, and you can practically walk to an Arby’s, McDonald’s, and Gold Star Chili. There were also two “sit down” restaurants nearby, but I cannot recall their names. Either way, if you’re there for one or two nights, you won’t have to eat at the same place twice if you don’t want to.
Overall
I was very pleased with our stay. As I went down to use the fitness center that evening, I ran into the night manager, who introduced himself and asked if we were having a nice trip. I told him we were. He was very kind and said if there was anything else we needed just to let him know.
If you’re traveling to or through Lexington, this would be a good place to stop for the night!
