Situated on the corner of Kaiserstrasse and Kapellstrasse, the Hotel Excelsior is well placed for a short but pleasant stroll to the famous shopping district (Konigsallee) the Old Town and the river promenade. The hotel website also says that it is near to the Exhibition Centre.
It is very near the Nordstrasse underground station and tram stops.
It didn’t take us long to arrive by taxi from the airport, about fifteen minutes at most.
The foyer is rather imposing and elegantly furnished. We were greeted by a very friendly employee who spoke very good English (so my rusty, schoolgirl German was not put to the test). Nothing seemed to be a problem for this man. He was helpfulness personified and became quite a highlight of our stay.
We had arrived early and as luck would have it our room was available. We were impressed by the hotel’s efficiency and its “no problem” attitude and settled in immediately. Tony lost no time at all in demolishing the small chocolates laid out by the side of the bed and a chocolate bar on the pillow. Bottled water was also provided.
We had a corner room facing the side street and while we could hear the traffic if we opened the window it did not disturb us when the window was closed.
The Hotel Excelsior goes for a homely feel. Our room was quite spacious and simply decorated in restful colours with gold curtains, plain papered walls and a flowered frieze below the high ceiling. We had ample space for our luggage. The sitting area had a television, a comfortable armchair and a cabinet, complete with ornaments.
There was a writing desk and complementary postcards. The wardrobes had plenty of wooden hangers but no bathrobes. The beds had fluffy “Plumos” (duvets or comforters) and large square pillows. I would have really liked to buy some to take home. It was wonderful to sink into them at night. Guests could leave any mending on coat hangers and repairs would be done at cost.
There was a mini bar and a safe. The safe was free of charge but key operated and not electronic. The coffee machine and drinks machine outside in the corridor was out of order and there were definitely times when I longed for coffee making facilities in our room.
The tiled bathroom was small but very clean. There was a bath with a shower attachment and several large containers of shampoo, lotion and body wash. Showers caps and refreshing lemon wipes were provided.
There were several nice touches to this hotel. Every day there was something left by the dining area for guests to help themselves. One day it was cake, another day it was little circles of flat liquorice and on another day large jars of sweets were placed on the reception counter.
The buffet breakfast was wonderful. Visually, it was a feast for the eyes. I loved the fresh rolls with meats and cheese. There were containers of hot sausage, frikadella, mushrooms, eggs (scrambled or hard-boiled) and tomatoes. A choice of fruit juice included cloudy or clear apple. There were little bowls of pickled vegetables and a multitude of jams. There was plenty of cereal and yogurt. Then there were “desserts” consisting of sweet biscuits, cake and some tall marshmallows covered in chocolate. It was impossible to try everything. We would have had to have stayed for a week.
The thing I liked most about going to breakfast (apart from the food) was the full length picture window overlooking a small courtyard full of pot plants. Every morning at least one of three hotel cats, Monty, Enzo or Elvis, would climb down a wooden ramp, have a leisurely stretch, then squeeze (and I mean squeeze) through a hole in the wall that acted as a cat flap. They could not enter the hotel itself (so anyone with a cat allergy can breathe a sigh of relief) but watching them was fun. It was like having pets by proxy.
Just off the foyer there is a bar and a large, comfortable seating area. Down a flight of steps there are rest rooms and a shoe polishing machine. Two small lifts take guests from floor to floor. One is in the foyer and one is around the corner from the dining room.
A few metres down Kaiserstrasse, on the same side as the hotel, there is a small supermarket, just in case you may have forgotten anything.
If you walk to the Old Town you can walk through the Hofgarten, a well maintained public park full of green parakeets and squirrels. On the Sunday we spent a pleasant hour trying to photograph them before meeting our friends, Regina and her husband, Jerry. Sadly, most squirrels were far too quick for us but they were amazingly tame.
I loved the atmosphere of this hotel. It was not pretentious (it is officially rated three stars) and the staff made us feel very welcome.
We would definitely stay here again.
