Last year, we moved from Charlottesville, VA to Phoenix, AZ. I decided that I was NOT going to drive cross country with 2 children. No. Way. Possible. 4 days one way in my truck with 2 kids, their game systems, DVD players and snacks, listening to the fighting and the are we there yets? No thank you. The $1300 in gas to drive, plus hotels and food would have been at least $2000, and to ship my truck was $400, so I decided we were going to fly and grab a rental car in Phoenix to get to our new house. I had looked into flying the major carriers- US Air, United and Delta - to find that they wanted $950 EACH seat for a one way flight, and would charge $50 per bag over the 2 each we could check in. After adding it all up, it would come to way more than I wanted to spend, so I decided what the hey, I’ll look at Southwest.
After checking their websit, I found that we could go from Baltimore to Phoenix, non stop, for $159 EACH. Wow! That was a lot cheaper than I expected. Plus, we were allowed to bring our own food, check in 3 bags each for NO charge, and could sit any place on the plane we felt like? This was sounding better and better. I decided to book the flight on Southwest and a rental car to get from Charlottesville to Baltimore.
After a 3 hour drive with 2 kids, I was a little tired when I arrived at Baltimore. We pulled up to the curb and a skycap helped us not only unload our luggage (12 bags total.. 3 check and a carry on each for my son, daughter and I), he made sure our boarding passes were complete, directed us to the drop for the rental car and was really hesitant about taking a tip from me (I had to practically force the money into the guy’s hand, which was a first for me, after many years of traveling for work).
We followed his directions for car drop off, took the car company shuttle over the terminal and got ready for what I thought would be a hassle for security. Boy was I wrong! It took us 15 minutes to get thru security because my son had a pocket full of toys he forgot to take out, but the security staff was so nice and patient with us. During our walk over to our gate, we stopped to check the time for our flight and found it was right on time. We got to the gate and were in boarding group “A”. The gate agent told us that if we wanted to eat on the plane to grab something at any of the restraunts there at BWI and make sure we were back to board 30 minutes prior to departure. We went to McDonalds and grabbed dinner and some snacks and went to wait for our flight. The agents made it a breeze to board, as they had the lines designated “A” “B” and “C”, and checked people’s boarding passes as they lined up. The plane boarded quick and we were in the air right on time.
The flight crew was a dream! They made every passenger feel welcome and took time to help anyone that needed a hand. They made jokes on board and made us laugh. The snacks were AWESOME! No awful stale pretzels. We had real snacks and plenty of sodas to keep us fed and hydrated on the 6 hour ride to Phoenix.
Our landing was great! Nice and smooth, and the captain was very friendly. He gave the kids each a set of wings and a trading card and told them to come see the cockpit really quick. He said that kids love the lights and switches, and welcomed kids in the cockpit of his plane any time.
All in all, we had a great flight and we continue to use them to this day.
Cheap flight, great service and sweet staff? They’ve got the winning combination.
