How well you will like your stay at The Xanadu Beach Resort & Marina will depend on your tastes & what you are looking for. First off, I would like to say that this is one of my favorite places in the world. However, you will find no shortage of those who will say, “this place is a dump”. If you are looking to relax, drink Bahama Mamas and just enjoy the beach in general; this is likely the place for you. If you are looking for a hotel that is only a short distance from bars, restaurants, shopping and other activities; this is probably not the place for you.
This resort is not in walking distance of, well, pretty much anything. You can rent a car but if you are American, etc. and feel uncomfortable driving on the opposite side of the road than you are used to, I wouldn’t recommend it. Expect to pay a cab driver a fee of $28-$32 round trip(not including tip)every time you need to go into town. When you check in, there will most likely be something wrong with your room such as, no air conditioning, broken phone, no hot water, etc. Not to worry, when you tell the front desk they will upgrade you to a nicer room. Do not take the elevator here. Even if you are on the 10th floor, skip the gym, take the stairs and consider it done. It is very common for one to get stuck in the elevator here.
All in all, for the money this resort is a good value and an excellent place to stay. The rooms are clean, so is the beach. They do have a restaurant & small store located there as part of the resort but their hours of operation are very limited. The food at the restaurant is too expensive, not a good menu selection to choose from & does not taste good at all(also known to make one sick). There is a bar & grill down on the beach that is a bit cheaper, with a better selection & the food there is really good. What I enjoy most about The Xanadu is that it is rarely ever crowded. There have been plenty of times when my husband & I were the only two people on the beach for days. So, you are kind of secluded & isolated. Again, this is what I prefer, some folks find it creepy. I do recommend a stay there, just know what to expect, be prepared and enjoy.
*FYI- There is a dive shop located here too.
