Ok. I’ll be honest. Although I’m not living there now I am from Knoxville. I’ll try to be too biased in my review and I’ll try not to trash it.
Like all medium sized cities Knoxville has a lot to offer. We’re proud of our city! It is home to the University of Tennessee, the Knoxville Zoo, the Knoxville Opera, the Knoxville Symphony and the Knoxville Museum of Art to name a few of the cultural offerings.
Knoxville is also home to the Italian Rossini Festival and the Greek festival known as Greekfest (no, this has nothing to do with UT’s infamous “Frat Row”.)
The main problem with Knoxville is the traffic congestion. There are many, many stores on the West end of town. Guess what? That’s also where the worst traffic is - other than the interstate.
As I write this, the main thoroughfare through downtown (I-40) is closed for construction. All traffic is being routed around downtown on I-640. Delays can be lengthy. Expect them. Be thankful if you miss them.
There are two main malls in Knoxville. West Town or Knoxville Center (formerly East Towne). West Town is bigger but to me it seems safer. In West Knoxville there are many, many strip malls. The largest strip mall or complex would be Turkey Creek. It’s a veritable maze of stores, restaurants and shops. Some people spend an entire day or more here and still don’t get to everything.
Non-shoppers will enjoy any of the attractions mentioned above. The zoo is one of the top rated in the country but it can be pricey. You can take your own food which helps. Expect to pay $16.95 for adults and $12.95 for kids 2-12. If you like zoos you might want to check into the family membership. It runs $95.00 for two adults and up to four children in the household. There’s a long list of reciprocating zoos and museums across the country that will allow you in for free just by having a membership at the Knoxville Zoo.
Another great place to visit is the Knoxville Museum of Art. Plus, it’s economical. Admission there is free until December 31, 2008.
If you have kids be sure to ask for directions to Fort Kid. It’s a free, community built playground near the museum and a nice place to picnic.
The World’s Fair park is a nice place to walk around. The former site of the 1982 World’s Fair is near the art museum and is also free. The fountains spray water high into the air. Not only is it fun to watch, it can be a nice place to cool off in the heat of the day.
Eateries in Knoxville range from the very expensive, four star Orangery to run-of-the-mill fast food. Motels can range from $36 or so at the Motel 6 to $150 a night or more at a downtown hotel. It is a town that appeals to the budget conscious or the higher dollar visitor.
I think it’s a good place to live. If you can’t live here it’s a great place to visit!
