Last weekend I had the sad duty of taking my 14 year old granddaughter to the Minneapolis Minnesota airport to send her back to California. I had such a great time with her for her visit for the past 6 weeks and was so sad to see her go home. My oldest daughter and I were going to make a road trip of it and she booked us a room at the La Quinta Minneapolis Airport Hotel, which is just about 5 minutes from Lindbergh International Airport. We really had no idea what this hotel would be like, but just needed an inexpensive place to sleep after my granddaughter got on the plane and before we trekked back to Wisconsin.

As we were driving on the I-494 we exited at Nicollet Ave. in Bloomington exit and this hotel was just on the opposite side and very easy to get to. We were happy to see that next to it is a Culvers, which we never did end up going to for frozen Custard. We arrived at about 5:00 p.m. and had no problem parking, we were right near the door in fact. The check in process was a breeze and we went back out and got our luggage to climb the stairs to our second floor room. I didn’t see an elevator anywhere, but since this 184 room hotel has only two stories I’m sure if climbing the stairs would be a problem they would accommodate with a first floor room. All rooms have an indoor corridor entrance so we walked down the long, almost stuffy feeling hallway to our room. Now most hotel keys require you to slip the card in, wait for the green light, pull the key out and then turn the knob. In this hotel the key has holes in the card and you leave the card in while turning the knob. It took us a moment, but soon we entered our immaculately clean, very new looking room.

The first thing I noticed was that the room temperature was good. Usually it seems when you enter a room it has that stuffy feeling until you can get the air conditioner turned on. Because this hotel room had a thermostat on the air conditioner/heater unit the temperature could be set to what degree you want and it keeps the room at that level. I appreciated that our rooms temperature was at 70 and while we did lower it a bit, it was comfortable right from the time we entered it.

Our Room

Upon entering we were met with a Pergo type of flooring. This wood like floor was at the entrance and throughout the bathroom as well. It was clean and made a beautiful entrance to the room. The brown/tan checked carpet felt new and was very clean, no stains or even flecks of dust bunnies anywhere. It met the wood floor just after the area where the closet was and added beauty to the room as well.

We opted for a room with two full beds and were absolutely delighted as we sat on them and felt the nice pillow top mattress. The beds were very comfortable although the style of the way they were made was a bit odd. They had an extra blanket folded at the bottom of both beds, but the comforter and top sheet were folded down in such a way that we almost had to unmake the bed before being able to pull the covers up. Both beds also included 3 nice sized pillows so we were both very comfortable. The 25 inch television was placed on an armoire that had two sets of 3 small drawers. Since we were really on a turn around trip neither of us unpacked into the drawers.

There was a long desk with a lamp and two chairs that you could use to sit at the desk area. You could use this area as table to eat at as well since it was rather long there was enough room for both chairs if you wanted to.

Amenities included coffee maker, hair dryer, iron and ironing board, alarm clock, a few premium channels on the cable television AND free high-speed internet which neither of us had any problem connecting to.

I was surprised that there isn’t a small refrigerator or microwave in the room as I do like having them to keep sodas chilled or to pop popcorn for a late night snack.

Our Feelings

Since we had no idea what this hotel would be like, we were both pleasantly surprised at how nice it is. Since it has been newly remodeled it felt clean and new and very comfortable.
I loved that connecting to the internet wasn’t a problem and that was enough desk space for both my daughter and I and our laptops to sit there if wanted. The beds were wonderful! This is a big thing to me since the whole reason for being at this hotel was to have a place to sleep before driving back home. They are not too soft, nor too hard and both of us felt very comfortable. We also loved how close it was to the airport. Since my granddaughter’s flight had been delayed we were able to keep track of when it would actually depart on the internet and then get to the airport within minutes. Of course always being afraid of being late, we were at the airport much too early.

We had planned to enjoy the continental breakfast, but after not getting back to the room until about 1:00 a.m. we slept until about 9:30 in the morning and didn’t manage to get dressed and down to it before 10:00 when it would end so I can’t really say how their breakfast is. The website tells me that they have waffles, French toast, pastries and coffee so a good way to start the morning if you’re so inclined and you’re up between 6:00 – 10:00 a.m.

Nuts & Bolts

La Quinta Minneapolis Airport Hotel has 2 floors, 184 rooms and accepts most major credit cards including American Express, Carte Blance and Mastercard. They also accept debit cards, Travelers checks and vouchers.

This hotel also has an airport shuttle available from 4:30 a.m – 1:00 a.m.

When staying you are only 2 miles away from the Mall of America, 10 miles close to the Metrodome, Target Center and Xcel Energy Center. This hotel is just 15 miles from the downtown area as well.

Our room was just $101.00 for the night including a $5.00 deposit (?) and all taxes. When going to ‘the cities’ - Minneapolis / St. Paul area I certainly wouldn’t hesitate to stay at this hotel again. It was clean, comfortable and very close to the places we wanted to go, the airport and of course the Mall too!
