I was born and raised on the island of Kauai and have spent many a day at Poipu. I have seen it go from a great family spot to an area similar to Waikiki beach. Surrounded by hotels and tourist, mixed in with a handful of local surfers and fisherfolk, the area has become a tourist trap. That is not to say that the area isn’t still beautiful. It is. Just picture a typical scenic Hawaiian beach and add about 500 tourists. The area is great for snorkeling, boogie boarding, and amateur surfing. It’s also a great area to spot some endangered green sea turtles and monk seals. If you’re lucky, you’ll even spy a new born seal pup in the early summer months. But, be careful! You are not to go within 100 yards of these animals.
The area is beautiful year round though it becomes very busy during the summer months. The summer is when everyone comes to Hawaii and we have the best chance of sun. Expect rain November through February and sometimes March and April. However, we have what’s called liquid sunshine; rains one minute, sunny the next. That’s year round.
The restaurants in the area offer very tasty cuisine…for a price. If you’re looking to save some money, pack a picnic, some beach toys, and a kite. You may be able to find enough space to get up the speed without stepping on someone in the off season months. On the whole, Poipu is still a beautiful area even if it has turned into a tourist trap. There is a lot of fun free activities and beautiful scenery if you know where to look. Take a short hike over the cliffs at Shipwrecks, bring some snorkels and fins and watch some colorful fish swim by, have a picnic instead of a bistro lunch and you’ll enjoy yourself immensely.
