SUPER 8 MOTEL - MYRTLE BEACH/BACK GATE AREA

About a week ago as I type we took a weekend trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for a mini-vacation. Our decision was made on short notice, and that being the case the selection of lodgings at most of the major chains was rather limited. Wary of the hodgepodge collection of often seedy establishments on the water, we decided to stay a few miles from the beach proper, and settled on the Super 8 Back Gate (aka Market Common).

The Super 8 Back Gate location is about 6 miles from the beach, situated on the Highway 17 Bypass close by to the airport. Although we had a rather hard time finding it at first based on the directions we got from the hotel staff, it did seem conveniently located once we got there. The hotel is just a short drive away from the beach and a plethora of tourist trap restaurants and shops. A straight shot down 17 will bring you right to the local mall and Broadway on the Beach with all its attractions.

The hotel is located directly next to a Kangaroo gas station, so you won’t need to walk far if you get a craving for a Coke, a bag of chips, or some such other snack. There’s a Cici’s Pizza in walking distance, and a number of other local fast food options as well.

An outdoor pool is available to cool off with, but I preferred to get my exercise directly across the street by following the bike/walking path on Farrow Parkway a few miles out to a scenic park surrounding a pond at Market Commons. If you’re really ambitious, you actually could walk to the beach, though it might tax you in the heat of the South Carolina sun.

Our room was clean and comfortable enough to satisfy us. We stayed in a two double bed room, and quickly drifted off to sleep in the cozy soft mattresses. An in-room dorm fridge kept the beer and soda icy cold while a microwave came in handy for reheating leftovers. The room was bright and cheery, and the bathroom was extra clean with plenty of hot water for all our morning showers.

The expected array of amenities was not forgotten, and we had plenty of clean towels, soap and shampoo, iron and ironing board in-room, and free wi-fi internet. Should you not have a computer with you to take advantage of the latter, there is one on the lobby available for guest use. A safe in the room for your valuables seemed a nice touch, and the wide screen (but not flat screen) Sony television was a bonus, too. Pets are accepted up to 35 pounds for an extra $10 fee. Coin operated laundry is available in-house, too.

Free continental breakfast was on the meager side, consisting of a few kinds of cereal, store-bought boxed donuts, English muffins, and waffles made to order. Well, you make them to order actually by pouring a cup of batter over one of two waffle irons. The latter seemed the most popular offering, and around 9 AM there was a considerable line to get at them.

All in all, we enjoyed our stay here. At $100 on a Saturday night, we found the value reasonable for a clean room a short drive from the beach. We’ve stayed at the Sleep Inn in nearby Conway in the past, and a room there will cost you about the same with a drive to the beach about five times as much.
